BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

i. List and explain the three determinants of health.
ii. List four(4) characteristics of a health person.
iii. Explain the meaning of a sewage and refuse.
iv. State four(4) methods of sewage disposal.
v. State four(4) methods of refuse disposal
vi. Explain portable water.

Determinants of health

a. Hereditary – Our genes determine our lifespan, healthiness and likelihood of developing certain diseases.
b. Environment – Access to clean and safe water, air, workplaces, houses, communities and roads all contribute to good health.
c. Lifestyle – Following a balanced diet, keeping active and not smoking or drinking contribute towards good health.

Characteristics of a healthy person

i. Absence of excess weight.
ii. Absence of physical deformities.
iii.Adequate posture.
iv. Possession of physical fitness.

Sewage and refuse

Sewage is a mixture of human wastes(faeces and urine). Refuse refers to everyday waste items e.g. papers, plastics, bottles, cans and metals discarded by people.

Methods of sewage disposal

i. Disposal in septic tanks.
ii. Disposal in pit latrines.
iii.Disposal in chemical toilets.
iv. Disposal into sea.

Methods of refuse disposal

i. Disposal in open dumps.
ii. Disposal in landfills.
iii.Disposal by composting.
iv. Reusing and recycling materials.

Portable Water

Portable water is water that is treated and is safe for drinking by humans. It has the following qualities;

i. It is free from contaminants.
ii. It has good taste and looks clean and clear.
